Virtual machine from DS to handle various tasks - mainly for proxying NFS->SMB
It has several aliases:

- gisdata.geo.vuw.ac.nz
Samba server#
Maps several NFS volumes to SMB. Mostly, it’s GIS data sets, documentation and some software
Host name for SMB is “gisdata”:
- for Linux/MacOS:
smb://gisdata.geo.vuw.ac.nz - For Windows:
\\gisdata.geo.vuw.ac.nz
Windows issues with unauthenticated access#
Microsoft has eventually disabled guest access to their network shares “for security reasons”.
If you navigate to the \\gisdata.geo.vuw.ac.nz in Windows, you might see the following error message:
“You can’t access this shared folder because your organization policies block unauthenticated guest access”
You can override the issue by enabling guest access. Please note that according to Microsoft documentation it “reduces the security of Windows clients”
- Left click the Windows Icon at the bottom left of the task bar, or select the windows key + r
- Type gpedit.msc in the Run Box
- Within the local Group Policy Editor, select Administrative Templates
- Select Network
- Select Lanman Workstation
- Double click Enable Insecure guest logons option
- Check the Enable option
- OK
